Hartley Primary School, Hartley Avenue, East Ham, London, E6 1NT.

About this record

Hartley’s year 4 pupils have used online search engines to find a range of artists that were born or are based in Newham.

They have been amazed at the rich culture that Newham has on their doorstep and loved looking at the range of artwork.

They discussed what they enjoyed about the artist’s work and what thoughts they had when they saw the artwork.

There are so many artists in Newham and they all have different styles and ideas.

I like the different patterns and strokes on the artwork.

 Learning that took place

In each art unit, artists are incorporated to make connections and develop a greater understanding of the skills that are being taught. With this project, pupils have looked at a range of artists that were born or bred in Newham. They began with a hook, trying to match artwork to an artist’s name. They were surprised to see how many artists came from Newham and how some, like Madge Gill, were close to school.

I like how people draw their feelings and emotions on a page.
