About this record

Act Up! Newham, an inclusive theatre company based in Newham, have spent the last months interviewing a wide range of people to research the history of how Newham became known for inclusive education. This page is about Ellen Goodey-Campbell, a woman with Down’s syndrome, whose birth encouraged those around her to fight for inclusive education in Newham.

Ellen Goodey-Campbell’s inclusive life in Newham

Ellen Goodey-Campbell is a 41 year old woman with Down’s syndrome from Newham. Her birth was a catalyst for change in this borough, because it made her parents want to fight for inclusive education for her and other disabled people in Newham.

We are Act Up! Newham. We have been researching how Newham became known for inclusive education and we interviewed Ellen Goodey-Campbell as part of this project.

Ellen told us about her inclusive life in Newham.

Because of her family’s efforts to change the education policy in Newham so that disabled people could go to mainstream school, Ellen has been included all her life.

Here is a film of Ellen talking about being included in mainstream school in Newham and in her life now.

I felt like it was important going to a mainstream school because of being together, me and my friends, because we all learnt a lot together.

Ellen says that she was included in pretty much everything. Act Up! have decided to use her phrase as the title of our show for Newham Heritage month!

Ellen wrote a song for Act Up!’s Newham Heritage Month project. Here is a recording of her song. It is called ‘The World of Inclusion’.

A world of inclusion opened up the day I was born.
