About Act Up! Newham

Act Up! Newham is an inclusive theatre company led by learning disabled members and made up of disabled and non-disabled people who work together to create high quality performances that challenge audiences’ perceptions of disability.

Established in 2008 our inclusive approach focuses on providing opportunities for actors who are overlooked by other theatre companies, either because of their disabilities or their communication difficulties, to have key roles in creating and acting in high quality performances.

We seek to champion actors whose disabilities or communication difficulties mean they are overlooked even in other inclusive settings and become a beacon for good inclusive practice, demonstrating to other groups how to develop inclusive theatre.

We seek to increase representation and participation of disabled communities in performing arts and promote social cohesion within Newham and surrounding boroughs.

Act Up! brings the voices of our members to the forefront and provide an avenue for the voices of people with learning disabilities to take part in conversations around creativity, oppression, injustice, and inequality through theatre. Through high quality and accessible performances that challenge audiences’ perception of disability, we aim to influence our local area to become more inclusive.
