In October 2022, City Mill Skate launched a series of purpose-built skateable structures within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, as part of the University College London East (UCLE) development. These features, termed “skate dots” by project leads Sam Griffin and Dr Esther Sayers, were designed to integrate skating into the urban fabric.
This initiative marked a significant moment in the evolving relationship between public space, community agency, and institutional engagement. The design and subsequent use of the skate dots served as a compelling case study in how skateboarders can assert influence over the shaping of privately owned public spaces (POPS).
At the time of its opening, City Mill Skate was the only dedicated skate space in the London Borough of Newham, addressing a long-standing gap in provision for youth and skateboarding culture in the area. The project stands as a testament to the potential of participatory urban design and the importance of embedding community voices in the development of shared spaces.
