Parrabbola became aware that there was a rich cultural heritage in Newham, particularly in the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries, but that many of the places where the people of Newham would go for their entertainment have now been lost – either to bomb damage, redevelopment or to repurposing. Our research has uncovered 7 former theatres and more than 20 cinemas, some of the latter going back to the very start of silent cinema.
We are developing three walking tours of the most important venues, in which our audio commentaries will provide the history and architecture of the venues, vivid examples of the sort of repertoire for each one, and of course will provide guided instructions on the route, including where to start and finish.
The three walking tours – one starting in Stratford, one in Greengate, and one in East Ham – will be delivered across three days at the following times:
- Friday 23rd June 2pm-3pm (Stratford)
- Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June: 11am-12pm (Stratford); 2-3pm (Greengate), 4.30-5.30pm (East Ham)
How to Attend
The meeting points for each walk are:
- Stratford: Meeting point outside Stratford station, adjacent to Robert the Red tank engine
- Greengate: On the corner of Barking Road and Greengate Street adjacent to Tesco Express
- East Ham: outside the old Granada Cinema, now Flip Out London E6 on Barking Road
