History is all around us

Katherine Road runs north to south, linking two of the main routes through Newham – Romford Road and Barking Road – and crossing postcodes E6 and E7. But did you know it’s also one of the oldest roads in the area, visible on maps back to the 1700s?

This road has undergone a huge change in the last 150 years. From country lane to busy thoroughfare, it tells the story of the whole of East Ham, an Essex village swallowed up by London.

Join local historian Ruth Bell and illustrator Salvatore Rubbino as we dig into the history that is all around us. In this family workshop, we’ll discover:

• Why our local area changed so dramatically
• How we can learn about the past by comparing old photographs with those of today
• What clues from history can still be seen and how to spot them

Salvatore will then lead us all in an interactive drawing workshop creating artworks that both respond to the history that has gone before – and look to the future.
