Green Street Heritage Art Session

WIILMA is proud to present an exciting lineup of events for Newham Heritage Month 2025, bringing the vibrancy of Green Street in the 1990s and early 2000s back to life. Under the theme “Newham at 60: A Borough Like No Other,” this special programme blends music, art, memories and heritage to honour the community spirit and cultural richness that defined Green Street at the turn of the millennium.

Before the streaming era, Green Street was a hub – a Mela of bustling stores selling Bollywood movies on VHS tapes, music cassettes, and vibrant community life. This anniversary celebrates nostalgia and turns the spotlight on that golden era, bringing together oral histories, art workshops, performances, and film songs to capture the energy of the time when it was the major destination for Bollywood audio, VHS cassettes, film magazines, posters and postcards before the advent of downloads and digitisation.

• 🎨 A special heritage art session, drawing on personal memories of Green Street, come feel inspired by old audio cassettes and VHS tapes, learn, explore and or/represent your memories and feelings about Green Street in the 90-00’s when it was a major destination for Bollywood music and film culture.
• 📼 Music & magazine sharing gathering, come share your audio/vhs cassette tapes and vintage film memorabilia with us. Come share your memories of Green Street with us through conversations with our team as we look to preserve this important history that shaped Newham’s unique identity.

Green Street was more than a place, it was a feeling, a destination and hub that helped people connect with their culture. Green Street helped shaped the unique identity of what Newham is today.
