‘Hear My Voice’- Stories From The South Asian Diaspora

Come and hear first-hand accounts from long-term local residents belonging to the Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi diaspora. Relive experiences of when they first arrived to Newham, and how they accessed the arts to keep connected to their cultural heritage – and to keep it alive.

This is a chance to embark on an exciting journey into Newham’s past and to find out how trends changed as the diaspora grew and the demographics developed. You’ll learn about public spaces like cinemas and video shops where music, arts and film from the sub-continent were available to watch, rent or buy.

Hear South Asian stories and voices, explore a gallery of historical images and quotes and watch the premiere screening of the ‘Hear My Voice’ – Stories From The South Asian Diaspora – a film which documents research and findings.

You’ll have the chance to meet event organiser, author and oral historian Farzana Hakim along with South Asian residents who, until now, have never shared their stories of how they have played a huge role in Newham life, arts and entertainment since the 1960s.
