This event will share previously unheard stories of how the Albanian community in Newham participated in the biggest sporting event in the world.
“We Played Our Part” will bring film, photography and storytelling together for a special event to lift the lid on Albanian involvement in building the London Olympic dream.
Albanians were able to find employment during around the London Olympics and were involved in the fight for a Living Wage at this time too but were these opportunities long-term or short-lived?
Albanians were also amongst those whose housing was impacted by the Olympics – a number of Albanian families were forced to relocate. This event asks whether promises made by the government at the time around affordable houses were kept what housing policy changes were made by the London Borough of Newham.
Lastly, this event will explore how Albanians in Newham were inspired to take up sport along with traditional recreational activities and customs and what impact it all had in their lives.
