Using cycle safe roads, the bike trail tour is led by qualified cycle leaders from Newham Cyclists and Frames of Mind heritage tour guides.
The ride takes 60-90 minutes, including stops and is suitable for all cyclists and children (8+) who are confident riders. Bring your bike and mobile to scan the QR codes.
Heritage Lottery Funded project Full Cycle, celebrates Forest Gate’s fascinating cycling heritage. Did you know, as the ‘gateway’ to Epping Forest, Forest Gate was the epicentre of cycling in the late 19th century, manufacturing more bikes than anywhere else in London, fuelling the craze for wheel-based activism & liberation?
Full Cycle QR Heritage Bike Trail
Frames of Mind worked with artist Toby Melville-Brown, residents, schools and cycling organisations to co-produce the Full Cycle bike map and trail. The trail stops at 8 cycling heritage sites across Forest Gate. Look out for the Full Cycle QR signs on posts and lampposts. The featured QR films are a playful and thought-provoking mix of contemporary interviews, archive material and animations, telling the story of our cycling heritage, past present and into the future.
As part of the Full Cycle day of cycling activities programmed especially for Newham Heritage Month ’25, Frames of Mind will also be screening their 22min documentary Mechanically Minded about Upton Lane’s iconic bike shop owner and local legend Ted Etty, who sadly died recently aged 97.
