A Newham Heritage Blue Plaque Unveiling Event

Newham African Caribbean Heritage Reference Group in collaboration with Neandra Etienne would like to invite you to the Blue Plaque Unveiling event for Newham Black Performing and Visual Arts Workshop. The event will include:

• Exhibitions depicting the life of the arts workshop and a current artwork from local school children.
• Iroko Theatre Company
• Dalloway Steel Pan Orchestra,
• Musical programme from local school children.
• Poetry
• A Panel discussion
• Light Refreshments.

Established in 1982, Newham Black Performing and Visual Arts Workshop provided a much-needed space for the black community to gather. It was a creative space where they ran workshops in drawing, painting, creative writing, poetry and singing as well as teaching Black History. Although for all ages there was a focus on supporting young people.

Many established creatives were involved such as Professor Benjamin Zephaniah (as tutor), Professor Hakim Adi (as history tutor), Josette Bushell-Mingo (as dance tutor), Joe Blackman (as creative writing tutor), Colin Paddy (as sculpture tutor) Sandra Agard Poetry. The organisation also ran events and were instrumental in bringing the renowned play Ragamuffin to Stratford Theatre Royal.
