Two Royal Visits

Newham City Farm was formally opened on 19th July 1977 by HRH Princess Anne. The event was reported in national and local newspapers. The occasion was attended by local Council representatives such as John Ringwood, schoolchildren from neighbouring Calverton and Scott Wilkie Primary Schools and farm employees like Fred Davis who recalls presenting Princess Anne with a box of eggs laid by hens at the farm.
Princess Anne returned on 10th July 2002 to mark the farm’s 25th anniversary dressed in yellow to acknowledge the “honey bee” theme to the event. Jill Stennings, a dedicated member of the Friends of Newham City Farm, has provided photos of Princess Anne meeting local people being shown around by Theresa Salmon, the Farm Manager. Jill recalls that the icing on the farm’s 25th anniversary cake was flavoured with honey from the farm and that a young boy from Scott Wilkie Primary School who had achieved 100% school attendance, was given the honour of presenting Her Royal Highness with a jar of farm honey. This is shown too in the Newham Recorder’s coverage of the occasion.
