The Save Newham City Farm Campaign

About this record

When local people heard rumours in July 2021 that the farm was destined to be closed, local residents, many of whom were previously unknown to each other, rallied together to try and convince the Council to rethink and consider other options to keep the farm going.

They tried many strategies, organised several protests including with people dressed up as farm animals and wearing animal masks, at the farm gates, at Cabinet and Council meetings, at Council buildings, they presented a petition to Council in October 2021 which to date stands at over 48,000 signatures, took a deputation to the Cabinet in September 2021, achieved national and local press coverage numerous times since August 2021 and attracted attention and support from other City Farms.

The core campaign team promoted the community engagement, consultation and co-design events regarding a proposed Beckton Parks Master Plan which were consequently well-represented by local people and organisations. The Cabinet Member responsible for progressing the Beckton Parks Master Plan committed in October 2021 to the farm site being publicly accessible green space and to the overall Master Plan including an “animal offer”.

In January 2024, LB Newham Cabinet approved the Beckton Parks Master which proposes, among other improvements to the green spaces in East Custom House and West Beckton that there will be a Community Farm with Green Skills Hub on the former farm site with the potential for the reintroduction of some farm animals in the future.

As of October 2025, a Council update suggests that there will be a call-out for Expressions of Interest in 2026 for external organisations who could sustainably operate such a Community Farm with Green Skills Hub.
