Neelam Modi – Neelams Hair & Beauty

Neelam Modi was born in Uganda in 1956 and moved to India in 1970, where she studied threading and beauty treatments before moving to London in 1984. It took Neelam time to set up her own business and in 1994, she hired a room in the back of a boutique on Green Street, which proved so popular that she soon had to move into her own premises and set up her own hair and beauty salon as well as hire staff to support her with the high number of clients she was receiving. Neelam says that when she first came to London, no-one was doing threading.

“I was so busy…people used to queue up for eyebrows, because I was so famous for doing my work in that…when I started there were no salons on Green street, today you can see there are so many salons on Green street, which has made me proud that I brought the beauty industry here.”

Neelam worked hard to create her business and one of the proudest moments in Neelam’s life was in 2005 when she received two awards for Business Woman of the Year and Growth Merit of Business by Newham Chambers of Commerce. Neelams Hair & Beauty has now been established in Green street for over 20 years and is an important part of the fabric of the community. Neelam has always worked on Green street and today has twelve women working for her.

She continues to love learning the latest styles and designs. The wedding industry with bridal hair and make-up has also been an essential part of her business that promoted her work and helped make the salon the success it is today. The community of businesses on Green street often worked together to support one another and cross-promote their different services. Neelam continues to love the Green street community:

“There’s always been a mixed community on Green street…and they are very loyal. I would never move anywhere else apart from Green street.”

Neelam has helped pave the way for so many other women and today the beauty industry is alive and booming in Green street. Neelams continues to thrive, with loyal customers who have also introduced the next younger generation of clients to the salon.
