Tidal Basin Road
1936

About this record

Kamal Chunchie, originally from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) founded the ‘The Coloured Mens Insitute’, located at Tidal Basin Road, Victoria Docks.

Coloured Men’s Institute 1936, Tidal Basin Road.

This community developed strong links with local churches and even set up their own societies.

Members of the churches would give food, clothing and shoes to local children and organise excursions and tea parties for all the community to enjoy.

Some of these churches and buildings still exist today and include St Luke’s Church, Canning Town, St Anne’s Church, Custom House, Flying Angel site of the British and Foreign Sailors Society and St Marks Church, Silvertown, however, Brick Lane Music Hall took over the building in 2003.
