Walking Tour: Discover Stratford Village

Discover the hidden Stratford

This guided walking tour will take you on a journey of the Shirley House Estate, modest ‘two up two down’ houses in nine roads built on green fields between 1894 and 1896. We will start from one of the oldest buildings in Newham, taking in a Congregational Church, a school, and corner shops, and ending at a Cafe that housed a cooperative with arts connections.

En route, we will share stories of people and happenings in the area over 100 years, from archive research and census data, which will celebrate the diverse lives of past residents. These were compiled by local residents and volunteers as part of the community heritage project ‘Discovering Stratford Village 1890-1990: Working Lives, Working Community’, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Tour Guide will wait by the library main entrance, wearing a large white and blue badge of ‘Discovering Stratford Village’.

Additional Information

The Walking Tour will take place outside and is about 1 hour long. The group will cross a major road before walking in a residential neighbourhood. There are toilets at the beginning of the walk, and for customers of the Cafe where we end our walk (optional discussion over tea).
