Jimi Hendrix wrote the lyrics to Purple Haze in the dressing room of the Upper Cut club in Forest Gate, Newham on 26 December 1966.

This event is hosted online and you will hear from Leon Hendrix, Jimi’s brother who will be in discussion with Neandra Etienne, local journalist and campaigner, for the blue plaque to be installed. Also joining the event will be John Walker, Lloyd Jean and Paul Romane.

John Walker is publisher of Forest Gate local history blog http://www.E7-NowAndThen.org which offers a detailed history of the Upper Cut Club and its performers, including Jimi Hendrix.  Lloyd Jeans is a Forest Gate historian, musician and collaborative artist and Paul Romane is also a musician and artist who put on an exhibition about the Upper Cut Club with Forest Gate Arts. Paul also runs a local open-mic showcasing the talents of locals and is a member of The Scumbags who put on a show of Bob Dylan Blood on the Tracks.

If you would like to ask a question to Leon Hendrix, John or Paul, please email your question by 27 May to Neandra Etienne by email on neandra.etienne@newhamvoices.co.uk.

This event coincides with the unveiling of the blue plaque that will be situated where the club once stood.

Please join us to celebrate this iconic moment in Newham’s history and to gather audiences and enthusiasts of Jimi Hendrix from all over the world together.
