About Immediate Theatre
Established in 1996, Immediate Theatre is committed to making the arts accessible to everyone. They focus on marginalised groups and diverse communities, creating opportunities for creative expression, personal development, and community engagement.
Since launching their first oral history project in 2023, Immediate Theatre have interviewed people from various walks of life about their experience of living and working in Newham, and their contributions to shaping the borough over the years. They aim to give voice especially to communities less represented in existing records, such as people with African-Caribbean or Southeast Asian heritage.
Their work in researching and documenting local history was first inspired by their 60+ theatre group, who have since been involved in recording oral histories for Newham Archives and producing a local history podcast, ‘The Hackney and Newham History Social Club’.
