About Hafza Yusuf
Hafza Yusuf is a Somali-British textile designer, Art educator and founder of Hafza Studio.
Hafza’s project was inspired by a trip to Newham Archives where she discovered the work of Newham-educated artist and educator Sonia Boyce OBE RA – the first black woman to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2022.
As a black female artist living in Newham, Hafza believes that more local people should be able to discover Sonia Boyce’s life and art.
For Newham Heritage Month 2023, Hafza will be delivering art workshops in local community hubs and schools. These workshops will provide opportunity and skills to produce creative responses to Boyce’s art.
Participants will explore her work through drawing, print, photography, video and sound which will in turn strengthen community bonds.
