About Birkbeck, University of London

Birkbeck, University of London – London’s evening university – has been delivering education for working Londoners for nearly 200 years. Since 2013, we’ve had a physical presence in Newham at University Square Stratford and are committed to delivering education outreach programmes in the borough which includes supporting and promoting Newham heritage.

Birkbeck researcher and poet Matt Martin says:

I’m a former resident of Newham who knows Silvertown well. Prior to beginning my PhD research at Birkbeck, University of London, I worked for many years in the city’s museums, specialising in the history of the Port of London.

Matt has worked with Birkbeck to develop a bespoke guided walk to enjoy from home called Making a Home in Silvertown.
