Newham Heritage Month is back for a fifth year, with £100,000 worth of grants available and a brand new theme. Following a campaign across the borough throughout October – and with almost 600 votes cast – Newham chose Places and Spaces to be the theme for our 2024 edition.
We are offering grants of up to £8,000 for you to be part of this annual festival of in person and online events made by Newham’s community for the community.
The theme for next year – Places and Spaces – will explore the buildings and streets, parks and squares, that were and are significant to Newham’s communities. We want to hear ideas for projects that will research significant locations in our borough’s past.
Projects will be expected to research a place or space in Newham, producing records for the website before contributing events to June’s festival programme, which comprises performances, workshops, exhibitions and activities.
Grants are available of up to £5,000 for individuals and £8,000 for constituted groups and organisations. The deadline to submit applications is 10am on Monday 8th January 2024. Applications can be made here.
“I actually applied the year before, but wasn’t successful. My application wasn’t as strong because I didn’t know what I was doing. So the next time, I went to the Inspiration Day at Stratford library which was, I think, the biggest help. I could speak to the team there about the application process and what they’re looking for.”
An Inspiration Day will be held on Saturday 2 December for groups and individuals to visit Newham’s Archives at Stratford Library to gain ideas for projects. This is an opportunity to also meet the Newham Heritage Month team and discuss ideas. This can be booked here.

Newham’s Archives and Local Studies search room is located at Stratford Library. Available for public access are a range of resources to find out about the history of Newham and its people including local newspapers, local parish and council records dating from 17th century to today, school records, electoral registers, historical maps, books, newsletters, and an extensive photographic collection as well as museum artefacts (which are not on display).
