A little bit of background….
This workshop is inspired by the heritage and art project run by Ranelagh Primary school for Newham Heritage Month.
Eleven year 5 pupils at Ranelagh Primary School in West Ham, have been chosen to be Archive Investigators finding out all about the Olympics in Newham. These pupils, who were born in 2012, are researching how the Olympics shaped the landscape. They uncovered medals at the British Olympic Archives at University of East London, sketched the Olympic Torch at the Museum of London and interviewed local people about their memories working at the Games.
A beautiful work of art by the pupils and created with artist and illustrator Salvatore Rubbino working with the archive investigators will be revealed at the end of Newham Heritage Month as a lasting legacy for the project for the community in the school.
Salvatore Rubbino trained at the Royal College of Art and works from his home in Stratford as a successful children’s book illustrator. A Walk in New York, his first picture book, began as a series of paintings that was short-listed for the Victoria and Albert Illustration Awards, and was followed by A Walk In London and A Walk In Paris (published by Walker books). These titles celebrate city living & the landmarks that make places special.
The pupils from Ranelagh are also planning an Olympic inspired parade at the start of their annual sports day on 28 June, sharing their inspiring slogans to share with the community. Check out Run Ranelagh Run !
