Keeping it Halal – Roots of the Curry House

Thursday 27 May 2021, 8-8.30pm
  • Free

Keeping it Halal is thirty minute long brand new documentary film exploring the origins of halal meat in Newham.

Revive FM presenter, Altaf and volunteers Hamayun and Alttaf from the radio station, have researched and interviewed the pioneers of Halal in Newham.  In the film you will hear, for the first time the recorded memories of elders from the Muslim community. The short film will explore how the scene has evolved from it’s humble origins of small grocer and meat shops, to large franchises across Newham today.

Revive FM started this journey by speaking to various members of the community who settled here in the early 1950s from the sub-continent. These people set the first footprints by opening small grocer shops, and supplying the local Muslim community with Halal meat.

The film explores how the attitude to halal meat has changed over the last 50 years.
