African and Caribbean soldiers and sailors settled in London after WW1 and by the 1930’s Canning Town had the largest Black population.
The men worked in local docks, factories, married local women and had families. They formed social clubs and community organisations across London to provide support to each other.
The entrepreneurial members of the community bought houses and rented them out to other black men and their families because finding accommodation was often difficult.
