About this record

For the month of June during NHM:2024 Place and Spaces and the London Festival of Architecture the residents of Newham’s historic Boys’ Club, a Grade-II listed building and former University Settlement founded by Oxford and designed by the celebrated architect Grey Wornum, best known for designing the Royal Institute of British Architects, opens Fairbairn Hall’s doors (and its heart) to locals and architecture, design and heritage lovers alike.

ABOUT A GRADE-II LISTED BUILDING IN NEWHAM…

Fairbairn Hall was originally a Boy’s Club–one of the most successful in Europe in the 1930s–part of The Mansfield House University Settlement, founded by Oxford University in 1889. Whilst the heritage of Fairbairn Hall has been well documented and preserved–for example the substantial Aston-Mansfield collection in the Newham Archives–there is a discrepancy between Fairbairn Hall’s recorded heritage and local knowledge. For example, locals no longer knowing what a Boy’s Club is. (Or was). Or that Canning Town has deep ties to the University of Oxford. And the Settlement Movement in East London. Many of its residents don’t even know that Fairbairn Hall is the only other existing example in London of the work of Royal Gold Medal awarded architect G. Grey Wornum, who is best known for designing the RIBA on 66 Portland Street, and the Queen Elizabeth Ocean Liner II.

Fairbairn Hall Presents… COME OVER TO OUR HOUSE, a collection of digital stories about Fairbairn Hall in the form of encounters with local historians, scholars, design experts, Mansfield Settlement stewards, and Fairbairn Hall artists, musicians, and residents. From a virtual tour of the Boy’s Club to a tour through Fairbairn Hall’s history, a new release by local musical artist Marcello Spooks, and other site-specific poetry and architectural interventions by Fairbairn Hall’s artists-in-residence, Fairbairn Hall opens its doors and heart to locals and architecture, design, and heritage lovers alike to share its stories and presents…

There’s a discrepancy between Fairbairn Hall's recorded heritage and local knowledge. For example, locals no longer knowing what a Boy’s Club is. (Or was). Or that Canning Town goes back 140 years with the University of Oxford, and the Settlement Movement in East London. And that Fairbairn Hall was designed by Royal Gold Medal awarded architect G.
