The Tate Institute, built in 1887, was the beating heart of a community for over 110 years, and now it’s being reborn as ReinsTate. From 1938-1961, it housed Silvertown’s public library, and during WWII served as a vital air-raid post. This proved that every single space holds the potential for something important.
For decades, the Tate & Lyle Sports and Social Club anchored community life. Generations gathered here for conversation, games, and celebrations, creating countless memories that cemented the building’s place in Silvertown’s cultural identity. After years of disuse, the building was officially closed in the early 2000s, and by 2011 was boarded up.
Today, Newham Council has partnered with ReSpace Projects to save the building, who since 2014 have been turning empty buildings into healthy community hubs.
